DESIGNING WOMEN STAR DIXIE CARTER DIES AT AGE 70

Sad news. Dixie Carter, best known for her portrayal of sassy Southern lady Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women, died Saturday morning. Her publicist declined to give the cause of death or location. Dixie has a very long career going as far back as the 1950s, but really hit her stride in the 80s appearing on Diff'rent Strokes and Filthy Rich, which was written by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, which lead to her role on Designing Women. A groundbreaking show in many ways, DW dealt with subject matter unusual for it's time such as racism, AIDS, ageism, and body image. Dixie continued to work steadily after DW, garnering an Emmy nomination for her stint on Desperate Housewives in 2007. Dixie was married to actor Hal Holbrook in 1984 and the two continued to love and work together until the time of Dixie's death, last appearing together in That Evening Sun in 2008. A great actress and a great lady, Dixie Carter will be missed, but her place in television history and our hearts will remain. R.I.P., Dixie. [image]
