REVIEW: CORINNE BAILEY RAE - THE SEA

Corinne Bailey Rae made her way onto the scene in 2006 with her remarkable self-titled debut album. Her hits Put Your Records On and, my personal favorite, Like a Star were just a taste of what Corinne was creatively. She was nominated for several BRIT Awards and Grammy Awards, winning Album of the year in 2008 for her debut. It took a while to cross over to America. After the success of her debut, Corinne began work on her follow-up, but suddenly her husband, musician Jason Rae, died of an accidental overdose. Corinne's new album The Sea, reflects her sadness in many songs. You can hear the longing in such songs as Are You Here, Feels Like the First Time, Love's on It's Way. Don't be tricked though. This is not just a somber album. In many respects it's darker and edgier than the first. There are some more guitars (Diving for Hearts) sweet organs (I Would Lie to Call It Beauty, Paper Dolls) and amazing soul (The Blackest Lily, Closer) and pure joy (Paris Nights/New York Mornings). Rae is in fine form and seems to be one of those rare singer/songwriters who can channel her emotions perfectly into her music. This album is a must. Love love love it. I give it an A.
