TONY AWARD WINNERS!!

What do you get when you cross the Oscars with the Grammys? The Tony Awards apparently. The winners last night were a varitible who's who of the music and movie industry with Scarlett Johansson winning for Best Featured Actress in a play, Catherine Zeta-Jones winning for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis walking away with Best Leading Actor/Actress in a Play and Greenday's American Idiot walking away with a couple of minor awards but most of the show's performance spots. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison from Glee, Broadway vets themselves, even appeared on the show to bring in some ratings. Not that any of these people don't deserve their awards, but it seems the theatre community is having to embrace "names" in order to fill seats, which is really unfortunate in some ways. As long as the work doesn't suffer, then I guess it doesn't hurt. Sean Hayes, who was nominated for Lead Actor in a Musical for Promises, Promises, did a great job hosting and Kristin Chenoweth, also riding high on her Glee appearances, popped up every few minutes. All in all, not a bad show, but not a great year for Broadway. Click HERE for a full list of nominees and winners.
