The Sign hit #1 on March 12, 1994, knocking Celine Dion's Because You Loved Me off the top spot, spent four weeks at the top, lost the position to Bump n' Grind by R. Kelly for two weeks and then took #1 again for an additional two weeks. People REALLY liked this song, you guys. You know, not me. But OTHER people. The Sign went on to become the #1 single of 1994, the #11 single of the decade, and when Billboard released their top 100 songs of their first 50 years, The Sign was #51 of all the songs in Hot 100 history. Dayum! Not to shabby for a band that is basically an imitation, up-to-date ABBA. Anyway, sit back, relax and try not to bob your head along to this 90s gem. ......Joyride by Roxette. Roxette are my second favorite Swedish pop act of all time, after ABBA, of course. TAKE THAT, ACE OF BASE!! Joyride was the first single from their third album of the same name and it established them as one of the biggest hit-making machines of the late 80s/early 90s. Joyride is a playful, upbeat song based partly on a note that band member Per Gessle received from his girlfriend that said, "Hello, you fool. I love you." Inspiration can come from anywhere, y'all! Joyride rode to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on May 11, 1991 and stayed there for one week. It left skid marks on my heart though, so I am bringing it to you today, 23 years later. Enjoy the #1 song this week in 1991, Joyride by Roxette. Oh, and Per's hair is NAILING IT in this video. No T, no shade.

KATY PERRY CLOSING IN ON AN IMPRESSIVE BILLBOARD RECORD

With her new single E.T. jumping to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Katy Perry is tied and set to take over a record previously held by Mariah Carey (ugh) and Santana (double-ugh) for the second most straight weeks in the top 10. At 42 weeks, Perry began her streak in last May with California Gurls and has stayed in the upper echelon since with Teenage Dream, Firework and E.T. all hitting the top 10, sometimes simultaneously. The act who holds the record you ask? Ace of Base!! Wow! Who knew? The Swedish pop act from the early 90s holds the record at 48 with the songs All That She Wants, The Sign and Don't Turn Around. That was all the way back in 1993-94. Hmm. Katy could easily tie and break that record if E.T. holds on a few more weeks, and with the video not even out yet it's a good bet I would say. Go, Katy!! What a great year it's been for you, girl!
