MADONNA FRIDAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARILYN MONROE. MATERIAL GIRL

In honor of what would have been Marilyn Monroe's 86th birthday, I give you the very first Madonna video paying homage to the image of the late, great sex symbol: Material Girl. Madonna made no secret about how much Marilyn's image inspired her early career, and this video took a direct approach in reveling in the pink glory of her famous Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend number from the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Material Girl was, of course, a take on the song and image, reversing it to make it clear that Madonna was indeed NOT a material girl. The irony was lost on almost everyone and the moniker of "Material Girl" has stuck with Madonna throughout her career. Well, could be worse! ha. Monroe inspired Madonna many times throughout her spectacular career in images, especially the pin-up poses, and of course continues to be an icon to millions around the world.
