This is one of my fave video mash/song mashups EVER!!! The songs AND the videos fit together so well and I love them both. The Power of Goodbye was the third single from Madonna's highly acclaimed Ray of Light album. It was her 37th top 20 single on the Hot 100. Human was a #1 song by The Human League from 1986. It has always been one of my fave 80s songs. The two songs together are really kinda magic. Enjoy the mashup by andersonandcarter.

HUMPDAY SEXY SONG: BRASS IN POCKET - THE PRETENDERS
Chrissie Hynde takes center stage, as usual, in the video for The Pretenders sexy song Brass In Pocket. Slow, seductive and raw, the song is the first major success for the band, hitting #1 in the UK in January 1980 and #14 in the US. Also known as Brass In Pocket (I'm Special) for the use of the phrase in the song, Hynde's longing vocals give the song that little extra something, that flirtiness that makes it a Humpday Sexy Song. Ya dig? Watch below and hump something. Wait. No. Don't.

MODERN FAMILY CREATOR, STEVE LEVITAN, LAYS THE SMACK DOWN ON ANN ROMNEY
Ann Romney, robo-wife of Mitt Romney, was recently interviewed and asked what her favorite tv show was. Her answer: Modern Family. In case you are one of the two people that don't watch Modern Family, it's about a family that is diverse and happy and complicated and hilarious. One of the couples is a gay couple with children. Hmmmm. Funny that she would be able to stomach that given her and her husband's opinions about gays. Well, when show creator Steven Levitan got wind of the statement he had this to say on twitter:
"Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show. We'll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam's wedding. As soon as it's legal.
— Steve Levitan (@SteveLevitan) August 28, 2012"
Ha. Mitch and Cam being the gay couple, of course. I'm sure the Stepford Wife would probably do it just for the attention. Hypocricy is so entertaining.

THE #1 SONG 50 YEARS AGO TODAY WAS....
The Loco-Motion by Little Eva. This song will never go away. So catchy. Of course if Little Eva was around today she'd be Lil' Eva and there would be a rap verse tagged on in the middle of this song, but I digress. Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, the song hit #1 on August 25, 1962 and stayed for one week. Most people born after the 60s know this song because of the 1988 cover that was the first international hit by Kylie Minogue and launched her career. Little Eva did it first! Here she is performing the song on Shindig. Enjoy!

THE #1 SONGS ON THIS DAY IN 1986 AND 1987 WERE...
....Papa Don't Preach ('86) and Who's That Girl ('87). How fitting for Madonna Friday. Papa Don't Preach was the first single off of the classic True Blue album and it reached the top spot August 16th and stayed there for two weeks. Who's That Girl was the lead single from the soundtrack to the film of the same name and it hit the mark on August 22nd and ruled for one week. Both are shining stars in Madonna's constellation of hits. So enjoy some beautiful August loveliness on this Madonna Friday. It belongs to her.

MADONNA FRIDAY: LUCKY STAR
"You may be my lucky star, but I'm the luckiest by far" So go the lyrics to the song that initally made me fall head-over-heels in love with Madonna. Although Madonna had already charted with Holiday (#16) and Borderline (#10) in late '83, early '84, Lucky Star, the fifth and final single from her debut album, became her first top 5 hit (#4) on the Billboard Hot 100 and showed her sexier, funkier side than the two previous tracks. The song was a dance club smash and worldwide hit. Lucky Star has proven to be a fave with Madonna fans, showing up in most of her concerts to date. The video is also a classic, with Madonna and her two backup dancers (friend Erica Bell and now-evil brother Christopher Ciccone) dressed in black, tattered clothing and dancing against a white backdrop. Simple, but VERY effective in furthering Madonna's image with the public. It's def on of my top 10 favorite Madge tracks of all time. Check out the video for Lucky Star below and "shine your heavenly body tonight".

MADONNA FORGIVES ELTON JOHN, DEDICATES SONG TO HIM
Madonna has once again taken the high road when it comes to Elton John's constant barrage of insults toward her. Sort of... Elton recently trashed Madonna in interviews, calling her a fairground stripper", and of course infamously insulted her at the Golden Globes this past year saying she didn't have a "f*cking chance" of winning. She won, he didn't. Madonna has mostly not responded to any attack from Elton, but in her concert in Nice, France Tuesday night Madonna reportedly forgave Elton John telling the crowed he is a big fan of hers. What song did she dedicate to Sir Elton? Masterpiece, her Golden Globe winning song from the film W.E. HAHAHAHA!! Don't try to out-bitch Madonna. You will LOSE! I love my girl.

TAYLOR SWIFT BREAKS KE$HA'S DIGITAL SALES RECORD
Taylor Swift is going nowhere but up it seems. The squeaky-clean country star's new single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together opened with digital sales of 623,000 this week. That number helped her tip-toe past the former record for first week digital sales by a female artist set by Ke$ha's single Tik Tok with 610,000. The overall champ is still Flo Rida's Right Round (ft. Ke$ha) at 636,000. The song We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is the first single from the upcoming Swift album Red, which is due October 22nd, and I have to admit....it's pretty catchy. You're not getting me, Taylor, so just back off!!! ha. Take a listen to the record breaker below and read along with the lyrics in the video. p.s. doesn't she sound like Avril Lavigne on this song?

HUMPDAY SEXY SONG: THE LOVER IN ME - SHEENA EASTON
This is what sexy looked like in the 80s: Oversized earrings, big hair, MTV realness and a lot of dancers in very little clothes. Sheena Easton started off as a good girl with songs like Morning Train, For Your Eyes Only and Telefone, but in the mid-80s and with the beginning of her "friendship" with Prince all that changed. First came the Prince-penned song Sugar Walls about...well....her "sugar walls" and then came The Lover In Me. Released in 1988, the song reached #2 on the Hot 100 and became her first top 20 hit in the UK after an eight year absense from that chart. The song is one of Sheena's most successful singles of her career. Now sure, there's some pretty awkward dancing going on with Sheena, but she makes up for it by being FLAWLESS!! Anyhoo, here is the sexiest hit of 1988, The Lover In Me.

MADONNA FRIDAY: GAMBLER
In honor of Madonna's birthday yesterday I posted some of her best known and loved videos. Today I go the other way. The oft forgotten OTHER song from the Vision Quest Soundtrack, Gambler was the second single released in the UK from the movie by Madonna, after Crazy for You. The song was never released as a single in the US, but the video was released to MTV to promote the film and Madonna performed it on her Virgin Tour, which is the video I included in this post. The song was written by Madonna herself and produced by John "Jellybean" Benitez, her frequent collaborator and sometimes boyfriend at that time. The song WAS released in other countries and was a top 10 hit in the UK (#4), Australia (#10), Ireland and Italy (#3) and other territories. Why wasn't Gambler released in the US at the height of the Madonna mania you ask? Well, Madonna was under contract with Warner's Sire label and the soundtrack was under Geffen records. While Crazy for You was allowed to be released by Sire, they asked that Gambler be held back in the US so as not to interfere with singles from her then-current Like a Virgin album. And that, my friends, is how the music industry works. I know I listened to the shiz out of this song on my little cassette player, so it was released in MY house. Anyway, here is a forgotten classic by the one and only Madonna, Gambler. Enjoy your Madonna Friday!

CHICKENS REACH OUT TO THE GAY COMMUNITY IN SUPPORT
Looks like the chicken comes before the egg on gay rights. Chickens from the organization C.L.U.K! (Chickens Love U, 'K!) have reached out in a letter to the Human Rights Campaign in an effort to distance themselves from the anti-gay Chick-Fil-A controversy. In the letter, penned by C.L.U.K. president Henrietta (pictured with her 8 chicks), the group clarifies their position on the controversy.
"C.L.U.K. would like to reach out to the LGBT community at this time of great controversy. It is our belief that all human beings should have the same rights under the law and that all should be treated equally with dignity and respect. The LGBT community has spoken up on their own behalf, but in effect has spoken up on our behalf as well. Because of the efforts of the LGBT community less of the chicken community are being consumed, and we thank you. We stand with our LGBT hens and roosters. STOP EATING US!!!! Cluck."
Strong words indeed. Thank you, Henrietta, for speaking up on behalf of gays and poultry everywhere.

WHY I'VE BEEN GONE
I'm sure some of you who frequent this blog have noticed that I have been absent from posting as of late. When I first started this blog I wanted it to be about positivity. I wanted it to be about things I liked and loved and not about things that were wrong with the world. I purposefully tried to stay away from politics and controversy as much as possible so that when someone read my blog they would feel good. The last couple of months have been so full of hate and negativity in the news. The Chick-Fil-A debacle alone has put me and my community in turmoil. The hate that has filled the internet and the airwaves have driven me to sleepless nights and anger, and away from the one outlet I had to spread joy and happiness, and for that I am sorry. I want to continue to bring light to the blogosphere, so I will continue writing. Please continue to spread happiness, equality and fairness with me and we'll change the world, one smile at a time. I'm back.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MADONNA!!!
Happiest of happy birthdays to the Queen of Everything, Madonna!! She is unbelievably 54 today. Madonna is the most iconic figure of our time, not just musically, but culturally. Endless debates on artistic freedom, human sexuality and women's rights have been started by the mere flash of a belly button or the grab of a crotch. Don't even get me started on the unmatched cannon of hits that have poured from her albums over the last 30 years. She has changed to world as we knew it and helped shaped the world as we know it. To celebrate this holiest of days, here are some of the most fab vidoes the world has seen. Happy birthday, Madonna. I love you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GERI HALLIWELL!!
Our little Ginger Spice is all grown up. Geri Halliwell turns 40 today! Geri was always my fave Spice Girl, and she is looking better than ever these days (as evidenced by her posing next to a photo of herself 15 years ago). Girl's got it together. She and her former bandmates are reportedly performing at the closing ceremonies of the Olympics, so expect some Spice Mania to break out once again. Until then, here are some of Geri's solo hits to hold you over until the Olympics performance. Happy birthday, Geri!

MADONNA FRIDAY: CRAZY FOR YOU
Ah, I love to love! Don't you love to love? Well one of my fave love songs of all time was a little boy's anthem of love for me, Crazy for You by Madonna. Released in 1985 from the Vision Quest soundtrack, it was one of the two songs (the other being Gambler) that Madonna sang as a nightclub singer in the film. It was Madonna's first ballad to be released and actually competed with her songs from Like a Virgin on the charts, even reaching the top 5 at the same time as Material Girl, which peaked at #2. The song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 30, 1985 (knocking We Are the World out of the top position) and earned Madonna a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Here is one of Madonna most loved and least performed songs, Crazy For You.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, APOLLONIA! THE PURPLE RAIN BABE IS 53 TODAY!
As a little boy in Texas I knew very little of the world, but I did know a girl group singing songs laden with sexual inudendo was pure, campy GOLD!! That is why I fell in love with Apollonia when she was the star of Purple Rain, playing a singer named Apollonia, and the lead singer of the Prince-mentored girl group Apollonia 6. She was gorgeous and just the right combination of slutty/relatable. The album, Apollonia 6, was on constant rotation on my record player in 1984, and I knew it was a naughty album even then. Odes to having sex for grades in high school in Happy Birthday, Mr. Christian, the classic Sex Shooter, and the nonsense perfection of Oo She She Wa Wa. LOVED IT!! Of course, Apollonia 6 was not long for this world and before I knew it, there was Apollonia playing, what else, a singer named Apollonia on the night time soap Falcon Crest. She sang quite a bit on that show also. Then her debut album appeared in 1988 and I was in love all over again. She had long since left Prince's camp and the album smacked of late 80s dance pop, a la Paula Abdul. The first single, Since I Fell for You, was a minor hit, but no sophomore album followed. Apollonia continued to work and is still seen occasionally, looking as beautiful as ever (the pic here is recent), to this day. So here are a few reminders of why this girl made her mark in the 80s. Enjoy some Apollonia below.

HUMPDAY SEXY SONG: CRADLE OF LOVE - BILLY IDOL
Billy Idol, in my opinion, is one of the all time sexiest rock stars. He has that bad boy thing going on and that devilish smirk. In 1990 Idol decided to amp up the hotness with the song and video for his smash (#2) hit Cradle of Love. One of the most memorable videos of all time -- a young girl seducing a nerdy neighbor -- unfolds in a stylish, classic MTV clip directed by none other than David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). I mean, how hot is this video, y'all? The song is, obviously, about cradle robbing, so the idea for the video wasn't too hard to come by, I'm sure. By the way, the reason Billy is only shown from the waist up is because he was still recovering from a horrible motorcycle accident and was unable to walk. Poor Billy. Anyhoo, get your day started right and watch this sexy, sassy video. Happy Humpday!
