NEW MUSIC: GOOD AS GONE - LEAVE THE LIGHT ON
If Melissa Etheridge and Dixie Chicks had a baby, you would get Good As Gone. I know I don't review a lot of country artists unless they have a huge gay fanbase, but I'm from Texas so country music is in my designer underwear, y'all! Based out of Austin, Texas, this up-and-coming girl power country band consists of LeighAnn Heil and Alexa Manza. The duo's debut album, Leave The Light On, is smart, tight and -- most importantly -- catchy as hell! From the driving (literally) opening track Go Fast, which tells the story of a woman who refused to let life pass her by, Leave The Light On delivers track after track of pure country-rock goodness. Hit the Deck reminds me of early 90s Etheridge with it's husky vocal and slow burn and there are sweet harmonies and melodies galore on Photographs and Sunday Drive. The album fits nicely into the Texas Country category, but also is a great country-pop album that should appeal to a wide range of fans. Think Dixie Chicks, 90s Lorrie Morgan, and a little Shania. YES! Take a listen to the album and buy it on the Good As Gone website, and check for live shows around the Austin area. These girls are rockin' it out, y'all! Take a listen to the ladies' playlist below.

DO NOT TRY TO STEAL BEER IN ALVIN, TEXAS!!
If you wanna walk into WalMart (strike one) and steal (strike two) cases of beer, do not do it in Alvin, Tx. Three brothers tried to do just that and a dowdy looking but brave/stupid woman tried to smash out their windshield with her feet for it. Of course she only ended up smashing the pavement with her face, but it's the thought that counts. Monique Lawless (ironic name, no?) pulled up her already boob-high shorts and ran out to their car after seeing them leave and telling the cashier to "WATCH MY PURSE". I cannot make this up, y'all. Now I get being fed up with crime, but why in the name of all that is tacky would an adult chase three possibly-armed criminals over three cases of beer? Pick your battles, honey. Oh well. Her heart was in the right place. She's like Xena... if Xena was a middle-aged lady with a black eye who lived in a Texas suburb and cared about beer. (strike three)Monday, December 14, 2009
HOUSTON, TEXAS ELECTS OPENLY GAY MAYOR
As a Texan myself, this one make me happy. Houston has just elected their first "openly-gay" mayor. Whether or not anyone has information that another of their mayors was gay but not open about it, I do not know. Anyhoo......Annise Parker, the city controller for the past five years, was elected in a run-off with 53% of the vote. Houston is the largest U.S. city to ever elect an openly-gay mayor. Parker stated that, "the voters of Houston opened the door to history." I agree. If Ms. Parker was the best person for the job, it's still a miracle that she was able to be elected in such a conservative state. Hopefully we'll see more of this kind of free thinking in the future.
