ANYONE SAYING MILEY'S NEW ALBUM IS UNLISTENABLE HASN'T LISTENED

I am reading all of the vitriol being thrown at Miley for her supposed bad hosting (I didn't watch) of the VMAs and (now debunked) befuddlement during Nicki Minaj's "take down" at said awards show, and I truly believe those are the same people judging Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Pets without listening to a single note of it. This album, released outside of her RCA contract on her own Smiley Miley label for $50,000, is an experimental psychedelic romp, sure, but it is also a solid pop album. The hype around it seems to imply it is weird -- or at least weirder than the average pop album, but if it is, it's not by much. The record has some silly segues between songs, but the songs themselves are solid. There are some really moving moments and some really spacey, wish-you-were-tripping moments on the album as well. Songs like 1 Sun, I Forgive Yiew, Space Boots and Bang Me Box are as fun and accessible as anything on the radio right now (though the last one is pretty naughty for radio play). Meanwhile Karen Don't Be Sad, The Floyd Song (Sunrise) and Something About Space Dude are tender, understated ballads that show an artist growing, writing and expressing herself with a mentor (Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips) helping her find her way. This is a thoughtful, eccentric and powerful statement by a young woman in the music industry. I refuse to believe that the nasty comments have anything to do with the music but everything to do with the artist. Not to say that everyone can't have their own opinion (your wrong), but this is by NO MEANS unlistenable and in many ways more satisfying than her last effort, the grand-pop of Bangerz. MILEY CYRUS: NEW VIDEO AND FREE ALBUM

Miley is bringing it back to the masses (but probably NOT Nicki Minaj) with a very gooey new video for her latest single Dooo It! AND a free album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. The song is a deep bass, hip-hop infused ode to smoking pot and wanting peace, among other things. It's a dark departure sonically and is a little whacky (thank to Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips), quite frankly. I kinda love it, but I don't know how much of a party jam it is. Ha. OFFICIAL FULL LENGTH VIDEO FOR 'BITCH, I'M MADONNA'

I told you I was going to wait until it was ready and available, y'all!! Ha. Madonna's third single from her amazing Rebel Heart album now has its video, Bitch, I'm Madonna. And she IS Madonna all up in this bitch. Filmed at The Standard in NYC (you know, where Solange beat up Jay-Z), the video is a hazy party blur with cameos by Rita Ora, Chris Rock, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé and more. LOVE IT!!!! Look for her sons Rocco and David dancing their little butts off too. Here it is, Bitch, I'm Madonna. If you haven't bought Rebel Heart yet you are a terrible human being. Fix that.

In addition to the Queen the video will feature Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Rita Ora (?). HAPPY MONDAY SONG: MILEY CYRUS & ARIANA GRANDE - DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER

This is such an excellent cover of the amazing 1986 classic by Crowded House, Don't Dream It's Over. These two former Disney darlings sit, sing and tear it the freak UP on this one. Miley Cyrus adds to her Backyard Sessions youtube collecting with this cover and Ariana makes me like her a little bit more. Miley also flirty quite a bit with Ariana. Ha. Adorable. Happy Monday!!!

REVIEW: G I R L - PHARRELL WILLIAMS

He has produced and appeared on so many songs by others that you might not realize that Pharrell Williams has only released one solo album prior to his most recent album G I R L, 2006's In My Mind. The critics and record buying public did not exactly go crazy for that album and Pharrell himself has expressed his displeasure with it. This time around, Williams took his time, worked with artists he liked and the results are a fun, funky and uplifting album. Starting off the album with a flourish of strings, Marilyn Monroe is P's ode to lovers and all the women out there. It's a great start to the record and immediately puts both of Justin's last albums in their place. Speaking of which, Justin guests on the album on Brand New, although he does not outshine our tiny beat master. Since Pharrell has produced almost every hit you've heard in the past ten years, it's no surprise this album is chock-full of hits. Gush is pure Michael Jackson Rock With You, sexy and confident. Of course, we all know Happy and are in love with it and it hits #1 on the Hot 100 right as the album is released. Come and Get It Bae features Miley Cyrus and take on some of her country twang to great effect, much like the Pharrell produced 4X4 on Cyrus' album Bangerz. Gust of Wind is a smooth, breezy track with Daft Punk. Another retro-tastic throw back to early MJ and it's an album highlight for sure. Lost Queen is an almost eight-minute opus that fills every moment with beats and lyrics worth the time. Take note, Justin. Don't just do an album of 10 minutes songs for no reason, girl. Know Who You Are is almost ruined by Alicia Keys. But then again, everything is almost ruined by Alicia Keys. That's all I'm going to say about that. It Girl closes out the album with a shot of funk and disco that sends you off into a booty shaking dreamland. I can't wait to see what the next single will be. Pharrell is finally getting his center stage spotlight and he is going to take advantage. I am guessing this will be a big summer album. Enjoy.

Miley was performing her Bangerz Tour in Los Angeles last night and a very famous pop star was in attendance. Katy Perry made her way to the stage during Miley's performance of her pop hit Adore You and the two shared on intimate little smooch. It's pretty cute. It seems like Miley didn't think Katy was going to do it because she reacts with a very adorable surprise face. Watch below. The two even tweeted about it after.

MILEY TAKES A LITTLE INSPIRATION FROM THE QUEEN OF POP

Miley Cyrus obviously has a lot of respect for Madonna (see her recent duet on Unplugged) and so in her newest spread for W Magazine the former Disney cutie takes on erotic turn. Of course most people will talk about the nude and semi-nude pics in the spread (click HERE for NSFW pics) but the one that struck me the most was the homage to Madonna's infamous Erotica cover. I posted them both together here so you can see the resemblance. Looks like Miley is setting her sights on the highest possible level of pop stardom and wants to draw on that well of brilliance to inspire herself. Smart, smart young lady. 5th ANNUAL AMAZY MUSIC AWARDS: SINGLES 5-1

AND HERE THEY ARE!!! Here is my top 5 songs of 2013. No big surprise, the ladies dominate again with only one fellow making into the top 10 and only three appearing in the whole countdown, discounting the fierce drag queens, of course. It's pop music all the way, but there is an electro maestro hidden right in the middle of the divas of pop music. Miley is back for her second appearance, as is Gaga. A lady who has written hits for just about everybody in teh business and a last minute shot to the top from what is sure to be THE album of 2014 and already my fave of this year. (Patting self on back) The ladies continue KILLING IT in the first installment of our Top 10 of 2013. Lorde repeats, Beyonce's sisters croons her way on and Gaga does a duet. Miley's first of two songs peek into the countdown and Lana Del Rey oozes sex with her entry. 2013 is truly the year of the ladies it seems.

THE FIFTH ANNUAL AMAZY MUSIC AWARDS: TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2013

I can't believe this is the fifth year end countdown I have done on this blog! Here we are again, the end of another year of music. What a year it's been. We learned a lot about hype, humility and coming in just under the wire to blow 'em all away, didn't we? I wouldn't say that this year was a particularly strong one for albums. There were plenty of singles that hit, but not all of those artists were able to deliver on the one-hit hype. These albums, in my estimation, were the most enjoyable front to back. I could sit and listen to them and they evoked a mood or a curiosity with each track. These artists were able to transcend in some ways the "just get a hit on the radio" vibe that artists are mostly after these days. They have that something extra special. Without further ado, here are my picks for the top 10 albums of 2013.

10. Electric - Pet Shop Boys - Seminal electronic group Pet Shop Boys came back this year with a brand new album, Electric and it's a damn shame that everyone was going gaga over Daft Punk (even though I really like their album too) because Electric is a much more diverse, fun set. Plenty of club tracks, like the opener Axis, along with some classic Pet Shop Boys melodies, like the delicious Thursday. The Boys were back with a vengeance and the whole album pulses with the perfect blend of what we've always loved of PSB and what is yet to come.

09. Britney Jean - Britney Spears - Hyped as Britney Spears' most personal album to date, on THAT it did not deliver.  Alien and Perfume are two of her loveliest songs she's ever recorded and Work Bitch and Tik Tik Boom are sassy Brit-Brit at it's most catchy. How much of Britney is actually invested in her music is not clear anymore, but the old girl (and her production team) can still push out an album full of pop gems. Keep 'em coming, Britney. Unless you're done. Then stop. What Britney Jean does deliver on is pop hit after pop hit and a little more personality.

08. Closer to the Truth - Cher - I mean, C'MON!! It's fucking Cher, people! Cher came back after about a 12 year absence. Her last album of original music was 2001's Living Proof. Closer to Truth finds Cher in full voice and as Cher as ever. Woman's World was just the tip of the anthem-berg. Take It Like a Man and My Love are glorious in their clubbiness and should be playing everywhere anyone is doing anything. This bitch is even going on tour again. AND I'M SEEING HER!! Closer to the Truth is a real return to pop form and as welcome a return as there has ever been.

07. Overgrown - James Blake - James Blake's second full solo album is smooth, sexy, experimental, electronic, sensuous and thoughtful. That voice, those loops and beats. James takes it a step further with Overgrown after his auspicious debut two years ago with self-titled debut. Retrograde is perhaps the most mesmerizing song of the year and the whole album will hypnotize you with its quasi-futuristic sense of musicality. This 25 year old musician has many years in the spotlight ahead of him and he is pioneering something very special.

06. Prism - Katy Perry - Prism is a hodgepodge of musical tastes. It wants to draw in the biggest possible audience and I think it succeeds in its quest. There are dance anthems aplenty, sweet ballads, introspective, if not cliched, heartfelt songs. Katy is coming off of one of the most successful albums of the past decade in terms of singles, and I don't think this is going to surpass Teenage Dream, to be honest. I do think that there are many, many songs to be pulled off this album as singles and eventually they will get to them. Legendary Lovers, International Smile and Spiritual have radio hit written all over them. Roar was an undeniable success, so Katy still has it in her.

05. Pure Heroine - Lorde - The 16 year old from New Zealand hit the scene with weird dancing and deep lyrics that go beyond her years and won over the world. You can't swing a dick without hitting someone listening toRoyals. Trust me. I've tried. Ouch. The album as a whole is quite impressive in its diversity and ability to keep the listener surprised and intrigued. Tennis Court is one of the catchiest songs I heard all year and Buzzcut Season is sweet, simple and soft. Pretty much every song leaves its mark right from the first listen. It'll have you going back for repeat listening for sure. Not just a singles artist, that Lorde. I'd say it's a pretty good start.

04. Bangerz - Miley Cyrus - GIRL!! This album is good, y'all! It's a little bit country, it's a little bit hip hop, it's all Miley. We Can't Stop and Wrecking Ball are crazy good and absolute chart gold and third single, Adore, is going to take us to a new place with it's soft balladry. There is literally no limit to the amount of singles they might pull off of this mo'fo'. #GETITRIGHT, FU, My Darlin', Rooting for My Baby are all single worthy. So forget the twerking and the tongue wagging and listen tot he music. The girl can deliver a song. Bangerz places Miley in the big leagues of pop music and she almost took it over this year. Now can she keep it going?

03. Tales of Us - Goldfrapp - Ethereal, mystical, soft, breathy, sexy and smooth are all words to describe Goldfrapp and their album Tales of Us. A concept album of sorts, each song weaves a tale of a person going through various things in their life from being born in the wrong body, having an elicit affair or simply wandering through life. Goldfrapp take this sound from the 80s glam of Head First (my #1 album three years ago) and back to their amazing 2008 album Seventh Tree but this time a little darker and little less folksy. The opening of Jo with its flourish of strings, the guitar galloping through Drew, the tribal stomps of Thea and the march of the album closer Clay take you on an unforgettable journey through time and space. Goldfrapp can paint a picture with their music like no one else.

02. ARTPOP - Lady Gaga - Lady Gaga was hyped and hyped and hyped until she oversaturated the market before the release of ARTPOP and it may have turned some away from her newest offering. That is a shame because ARTPOP actually takes Gaga back to the simpler times when she was writing for the sake of the beat and the fun than for a cause. Not to say I didn't love Born This Way (my #1 pick two years ago), but ARTPOP is a lot more fun in many ways with is tongue-in-cheek subjects and fun lyrics. The title track is one of the most stunning and simple pieces I think Gaga has ever done and Applause is pure anthemic fun. Venus, Do What U Want, G.U.Y. all deserve their time in the spotlight. If she can get people to start paying attention to the music again, Gaga has still got a lot to show us.

01. Beyoncé - Beyoncé - Well, she did it. Beyoncé released a surprise album and absolutely crushed every bitch on the block. This album is everything Beyoncé is; sassy, smart, classy, sexy, and fresh. It's also things Bey usually isn't: open, real, warm and experimental. There are things we've never heard her do like the crunchingly swaggy Partition and gangster of ***Flawless. There is also pure pop candy in the form of the ode to cunnilingus Blow and the best love anthem I've heard in years XO. We have our usual, stunning Beyoncé ballads here as well with Pretty Hurts and the haunting Heaven, but we also have her very own Thriller in the heavenly Haunted. (See what I did there?) The sky is the limit and Beyoncé is reaching for it. The whole disc is packed full of perfection, including the accompanying videos, and we have a big couple of year ahead of us with this album. It's definitely earned it's position atop this years album picks. Destined to be a classic.

LADY GAGA HITS #1 WITH ARTPOP

After all the speculation, Lady Gaga will indeed debut at #1 with her latest album, ARTPOP. The album takes the crown selling 258,000 copies. Billboard reports that Gaga's sales breakdown was 146,000 digital downloads, 57 percent of sales, and the rest were physical cds. This puts Gaga third in line for the highest debut by a female in 2013. Katy Perry opened with 286,000 and Miley Cyrus snagged 270,000. Good for all the ladies! You can read my review of ARTPOP here. MILEY CYRUS SMOKES WEED ON STAGE AT EUROPEAN VMAs

Miley Cyrus, looking hot, winning an award, smoking a doobie. What the hell is wrong with that? The MTV Europe VMAs were held this past weekend and Miley won Best Video for Wrecking Ball. While on stage she lit up! It's legal in Amsterdam, where the awards were held, after all, so who cares? Right? Oh, people are freaking out about it. Well, Miley has become the new lightening rod for controversy, so get used to it, angry parents. I'm sure the performance clips will come on line later today, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, watch her light up below. It's kinda cute actually.

MINIMALISM IN MUSIC VIDEOS

Sinead O'Connor recently ripped Miley Cyrus a new a-hole with a series of open letters for Miley comparing her Wrecking Ball video to Sinead's Nothing Compares 2 U vid. I see where Miley is coming from with the longing close ups and whatnot, so Sinead should probably just calm the F down. Right? It did, however, get me thinking about other videos that feature just someone's mug looking into the camera. Seems like a pretty cheap way to make a video, but I guess it can be pretty effective too. The Lorde video for Tennis Court and Bjork's Hunter are especially good, IMO. Here are some that popped into my mind right away, along with Sinead and Miley. If you can think of anymore, by all mean list them below for others to look up.

MILEY CYRUS, JIMMY FALLON & THE ROOTS DO AN AMAZING A CAPPELLA VERSION OF WE CAN'T STOP

AH-MAH-ZING!! I love Jimmy Fallon's little musical shorts, like the All I Want for Christmas with Mariah that actually made me like Mariah for a full three minutes. This one is awesome!! Miley, Jimmy and the boys do We Can't Stop Brady Bunch style and a cappella. It's pretty cool! Cyrus' new album, Bangerz, is out now on iTunes and I would be SHOCKED if it didn't debut big on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. Anyway, here ya go. Enjoy!!

MILEY CYRUS' PERFORMS WRECKING BALL AND CAN'T STOP ON SNL

Miley Cyrus hosted and was the musical guest on SNL this weekend, and I must say that she did pretty darn good, you guys. Her first couple of lines on the mic didn't bode well for her, but then she got past SNL's notoriously difficult sound problems and nailed her performance of Wrecking Ball, sounding strong and confident. For We Can't Stop, Miley switched that shiz up and sang it as a country ballad. NICE!! Oh, and she had a little person playing guitar on stage with her. Oh, and of course she wore something see-through for both performances. Ha. Keep it classy, Miley. Guys, I'm kind of in love with her now.

TRACK-BY-TRACK REVIEW: BANGERZ (DELUXE VERSION) - MILEY CYRUS

Miley Cyrus' new, much-anticipated album, Bangerz, is finally here. Were you waiting as patiently as I? A decidedly grown up Miley seems to be in control of what is happening on this record, I must say, along with executive producer Mike Will Made It (whose name is recited at the start of every other song). Very determined vocals, power ballads, some goofy fun and great production. Here is my track-by-track review of Ms. Cyrus' adult debut album, if you will.

1. Adore - A straight up love ballad starts off Bangerz, and it's a great way to do it. Soft, lush and quite pretty. A subtle, nuanced vocal performance given in almost a whisper at times. A song about how much she loves her man. I could definitely see this as single material. Adore reminds me of those 90s ballads from Shania Twain like Still the One, aka I love it.

2. We Can't Stop - I really don't need to review this amazy song, do I?

3. SMS (Bangerz)(feat. Britney Spears) - FUN!! Okay, yes. At first listen it is a little overwhelming, but it's actually kind of cute and funny. Britney doesn't show up until the second verse, but Miley is doing a little rapping all through the beginning and then it's a sexy little girly jam all the way through. Even a little naughty ("They as me how I keep a man. I keep a battery pack." Ha!)I am guessing that this WILL be a single. I mean, Britney and Miley? Right?? I can practically see the hot-pants-crop-top video already.

4. 4X4 (feat. Nelly) - "I'm a female rebel" is how this country/rap hybrid starts off. I know "country/rap hybrid" does not instill a lot of confidence in me either, but this is actually kind of fun, y'all! I mean, Miley herself has become a bit of a link between hip hop and country lately and Nelly has always been pretty country, right? It's a hip hop hoe down, bitches!!! Yee-haw!

5. My Darlin' (feat. Future) - Once again, just like Loveeeeeee (I can't with all of those "e"s) on Rihanna's last album, a perfectly good song is ruined by "singer" Future. I do NOT understand him or anyone's interest in him. C'mon! That computer thing they do with his voice makes me want to kill my eardrums. An otherwise fine ballad is ruined by him. That's all I have to say about that.

6. Wrecking Ball - I mean....this song is one of (if not THE) best song of the year so far, IMO.  I absolutely love it. Miley's first #1, y'all!

7. Love Money Party (feat. Big Sean) - Another big party song. Coming in sounding like somewhat of a dark circus theme, Miley mostly speed raps and does it pretty convincingly, I must say. Pretty fun little jam.

8. #GETITRIGHT - Jumping on the hash tag craze, this song is just a breezy little number that rolls along at a pretty easy pace with a whistle along melody. Not exactly a standout track, but not a throw away either. Probably more and more catchy as you hear it more.

9. Drive - It's interesting on these hip hop ballads how Miley's voice still leans toward country music. It sort of draws into focus the similarity between the two genres in a way. Drive is dark and emotional, much like Wrecking Ball in feeling. Very nice.

10. FU (feat. French Montana) - Picking up the pace, but staying dramatic, Miley gets a little angry on FU, as you can imagine from the title. A rap/sung collaboration that works for the most part. Clever lyrics help keep the groove moving along.

11. Do My Thang - Yep. I wrote "thang". That's the way it's spelled, k? At this point you will notice there are a lot of break up songs on Bangerz. This is no exception. You let Miley go and she's gonna do her "thang", girl. This song sounds a lot like a Rihanna track; not her best, not her worst. There are some nice parts of the song, but it's not my fave on first listen.

12. Maybe You're Right - Another break up song with another good vocal on it, a military drum beat and a piano melody thrown in for good measure. Not quite as single worthy as Drive, but could be another ballad release from Bangerz.

13. Someone Else - Sexy!! This song immediately reminded me of What's My Name when it first started, but there's an underlying tension with some club synths and a jittery beat break in before the one minute mark. Pretty cool track that I can see getting a great remix for the clubs.

14. Rooting For My Baby - OH! Now this surprised me. This could easily be a Norah Jones/Colbie Caillat/Carly Simon song. Smooth, sexy, easy listening part of the album I guess. I love it actually. I almost think this is the most unexpected and surprising song on the album, just for the simple sexiness of it. Pharrell is the producer, and I guess if anyone can do smooth and sexy, it's that little cutie pie.  Def a highlight.

15. On My Own - No, Miley is not doing Les Miz!! Ha. Now Pharrell is giving it a groove and a snarl. On My Own is a declaration of independence with a disco beat. Reminds me of Ring My Bell, another Deluxe Version song produced-Pharrell  on Madonna's Hard Candy album. That should have been a single, y'all! Pretty great diva song.

16. Hands In The Air (feat. Ludacris) - Ending on a darker note, bass synth and creepy bleeps and blurbs set the tone for the album closer. The song itself isn't about anything creepy, but about being with someone Miley apparently likes in a club. I like it. It's got a pretty cool vibe. I don't know if this is how to end this particular record, but it's a good track.

HILARIOUS SNL PROMOS FOR MILEY CYRUS THIS WEEKEND!!!

Good for you, Miley!! I love a girl with a sense of humor. Miley Cyrus is the host and musical guest for Saturday Night Live this weekend and here are the promos with Taran Killam. Looks like she is up for a good time and willing to poke fun at herself. I am pretty excited to see how she does hosting/performing this time around. I am also (surprisingly) looking forward to her new album Bangerz  (October 8th), I gotta say. My fave joke from the promos is when Taran asks Miley why she sticks her tongue out all the time. Watch for the answer, doofus! Don't be so lazy. GAWD!
