Billy Ocean was a pop star! Can you imagine this man being a pop star now? He was so normal and not flashy in any way. It was the 80s and times were simpler, different. I loved Billy personally. The Trinidad born singer (real name Leslie Sebastian Charles) was raised from the age of 8 in the UK. Although he started recording there in 1972 and eventually had several hits on the UK chart during the 70s, his biggest success all over the world came with the release of the album Suddenly (#9 US). Ocean's song Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run) (also recorded as African Queen and European Queen for other parts of the world) became a world-wide smash, a #1 hit in the US, and vaulted Billy to international pop stardom. Singles Suddenly (#4 US) and Loverboy (#2 US) followed along with a spot performing in the legendary Live Aid Concert. His next album, Love Zone(#6 US) piled on the hits When the Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going) (#2 US) (which was also featured in the Kathleen Turner/Michael Douglas movie Jewel of the Nile) and There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) (#1 US). Perhaps his best known song came from his 1988 album Tear Down These Walls (#18 US): Get Out Of My Dreams, Get Into My Car (#1 US). This was his last chart major success in the US as his next album did not produce a hit and he faded away from the pop charts. His greatest hits albums continue to sell pretty well around the world and Billy shows up every now and then for a performance or photo op. His 1980s string of hits will keep Billy Ocean alive in the minds of a generation and surely fill a few gaps on the oldies station. (hey, that rhymes!) Enjoy some Billy Ocean and start your day off with a smile!
