HUMPDAY SEXY SONG: CLOSER - NINE INCH NAILS

Nine Inch Nails isn't exactly known for a subtle approach to music making, but Closer pulls absolutely no punches AT ALL!! From the super-dark mood of the song, the pulsating synths and the notorious refrain of the chorus (I wanna f**k you like an animal) there is no doubt this song is about sex, sex, sex. Released in 1994 from NIN's The Downward Spiral album, Closer pretty much cemented Trent Reznor as the king of industrial rock. The uber-controversial Mark Romanek directed video includes images dealing with religion, sex, torture, S&M and was only shown in a censored, edited down version late at night on MTV and other music video channels. Only the Playboy TV video show Hot Rocks showed the unedited version in 1994. The song became NIN's biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit  up to that point (#41) and their signature track. LADY GAGA SINGING TITLE SONG FROM "ARTPOP" AT iTUNES FESTIVAL

Depending on who you talk to, Lady Gaga's iTunes Festival performance was either amazing or a total self-indulgent mess. I am somewhere in the middle. Since the first time I saw Gaga perform at the tiny, intimate space at Terminal 5 just a couple of months after her first #1 single, my only complaint about her concerts is her LONG LONG LONG-ASS monologues between songs. I like a little banter, but C'MON, GURL! Give me a song at least every hour on the hour. Ha. I love her though, don't get me wrong. Her performance kicked off the iTunes festival with no old hits but 8 brand new songs from her upcoming ARTPOP album, and the songs themselves sound pretty promising.....not super commercial, but promising. Gaga changed on stage several times (taking her sweet ass time), wore her own hair for a while (a short black bob, BTWs) and sang songs about sex, love, drugs and being yourself. This song in particular, the title track, really caught my ear balls. It's got a Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, industrial kind of feel to it and I think it'll be a hit. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVID BOWIE. OH, AND THANKS FOR THE NEW MUSIC!!

Music legend and all around cool guy David Bowie is 66 today. WHAT? 66? Yes, 66. Ziggy Stardust is getting up there in years, but he is still on top of his game, as evidenced by this lovely, melancholy, Beatles-esque track, Where Are We Now? The Thin White Duke is still cutting an attractive frame as well. From his earliest recording in the late '60s through today, Bowie has changed and evolved and kept us interested in a way few artists had done before him. He ushered in the '70s Glam Rock era, popped the top of the pop charts in the '80s, dabbled in electronica, with a little help from Nine Inch Nails (sigh), in the '90s. From the sound of his new single, David is feeling nostalgic these days. The new album, The Next Day, will be released in March. Sit back, relax and enjoy Bowie's birthday present and some classic tracks on this, his 66th birthday. Now let's dance.
