THE #1 SONG 20 YEARS AGO TODAY WAS....

Black or White by Michael Jackson. Already one of the biggest stars ever in the world, Jackson released the first single from his eighth studio album, Dangerous, and it went over like gangbusters sitting at #1 for 7 consecutive weeks, becoming Michael's 11th #1 solo single. The video for Black or White caused a lot of controversy because of it's extended, ending scene in which Jackson grabbed his crotch multiple times and vandalized cars. The street scene in which this occurs also had graffiti scribbled on cars and walls reading "Hitler lives", "Ni**er go home", "KKK rules" and "No more wetbacks". Although it was obvious MJ was condemning these things, parents argued it was inappropriate to show after a mostly kid-friendly and harmless video. Regardless, the song is one of the most distinct and popular in the cannon of Michael's music and is a fan favorite. So here it is, the #1 song on this day in 1991, Black or White. OH, look for a young Tyra Banks in the face-morphing scene towards the end. I couldn't find the version with the crotch grabbing. Oh, well.
