MADONNATHON: MATERIAL GIRL

Of all the songs Madonna has recorded, the one she has said she most regrets is Material Girl. Why? Not because she doesn't like the song, but because it was misunderstood and gave her the nickname she hates the most!!! The second single from her smash sophomore album Like a Virgin, Material Girl has become one of Madonna's most recognized and popular songs of all time. Meant to be ironic, the song casts Madonna as a girl not interested in relationships and love but money and fame. The video was even inspired by one of the most famous gold-digging songs of all time, Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend, with Madonna doing her first "Marilyn" look and mimicking the dance sequence from the film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Material Girl shot up the Hot 100 to #2 on the charts, eventually sharing the top 5 with her next single, Crazy For You. Interesting side note, Madonna met her first husband and the man she called the love of her life (in the film Truth or Dare), Sean Penn, on the set of the video for Material Girl.
